Personal Profile

Dr. Zaigham Abbas is currently working as Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at the Ziauddin University Hospital, Clifton Karachi. He is the Vice President and President-elect of Pakistan Society for the Study of Liver Diseases (PSSLD), member and ex-Dean of the Faculty of Gastroenterology in the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, and Governor of the American College of Gastroenterology for Pakistan. He is a member of the Guidelines Committees of the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) and the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), and a member of The Coalition for the Eradication of Viral Hepatitis in Asia Pacific (CEVHAP). He is a founding member of the Executive Committee, South Asian Association for the Study of the Liver (SAASL). He is a member of the Academic Board, The Kidney Centre Postgraduate Training Institute and Honorary Senior Lecturer at The Aga Khan University. He is ex-member of the Executive Committee of APASL, and Ex-Vice President of the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology. He established the Department of Hepatogastroenterology at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) and served as its Head for fifteen years where he trained many fellows in gastroenterology and hepatology and helped start the liver transplantation program. He has represented Pakistan in many international meetings as a faculty member. He is currently doing collaborative work with the Hepatitis Delta International Network and APASL ACLF Research Consortium. He has more than 200 publications to his credit in peer reviewed journals.

  • He is a graduate of Nishtar Medical College (1976), served in the medical corps of the armed forces as a General Physician and followed by Gastroenterology.
  • He was trained locally and abroad; served in Muscat, Oman; and spent a lot of time with Naval Hospital Karachi.
  • He was appointed Personal Physician to the Prime Minister of Pakistan. He remained a member of Drug Registration Board at Ministry of Health.
