Karpen, M.D., Ph.D.\u00a0FAASLD is a pediatric hepatologist, Professor of Pediatrics, Raymond F. Schinazi Distinguished Biomedical Chair, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Emory University School Medicine\/Children\u2019s Healthcare of Atlanta.\u00a0The overarching aim of Dr. Karpen&#8217;s research is to understand the root causes and adaptive mechanisms for cholestasis, with the goal of discovering and implementing rational molecular targets, focusing upon nuclear receptors, bile acids and transporters.\u00a0His overall goals are to develop integrative programs to improve clinical care, enhance basic hepatology research, and provide applied clinical research, including the discovery of new therapeutic agents\u2014all focused upon the unique and pressing needs of infants and children with liver disease.<\/p><p>On a national and international basis, he is co-chair of the Liver Forum\u2019s International Pediatric Cholestatic Disease Working Group and an active participant in two NIDDK-supported consortia for liver disease:\u00a0ChiLDReN and NASH CRN. His service to the organization includes serving as Chair of the Basic Research Committee, Pediatric Member of the Scientific Program Committee (SPC), and Chair of the\u00a0Cholestatic and Autoimmune Liver Diseases and Pediatric Liver Disorders SIGSs.
