Updates on the Diagnosis and Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Karachi: Ziauddin University in association with the Pakistan Society for the Study of Liver Diseases (PSSLD) organized an event on “Updates on the Diagnosis and Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma”. Dr. Ammad Hussain, Chief Executive of Dr. Ziauddin Hospital Clifton Campus welcomed the delegates.

President of PSSLD Prof. Dr. Zaigham Abbas, Head Department of Hepato-Gastroenterology, Dr. Ziauddin Hospital Clifton Campus commenced the seminar with the presentation on “Surveillance of Hepatocellular Carcinoma” he highlighted the magnitude of this problem in Pakistan. He said that in Pakistan there was a need to organize, coordinated and national system of surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma. Early detection of carcinoma in high-risk groups will be the key to protect patients from the lethal consequences of this disease. He said that guidelines are available from AASLD, EASL, APASL, NCCN, VA, and JSH to develop surveillance programs for hepatocellular carcinoma. He said alfa fetoprotein, PIVKA (DCP) and alfa fetoprotein L3 biomarkers are helpful in the early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma. He mentioned the GALAD scoring that includes gender and age in addition to the biomarkers mentioned above.

Dr. Usman Ali, Consultant Chemical Pathologist, Department of Pathology, Ziauddin University discussed the “Tumor Markers of Hepatocellular Carcinoma” he thanked Prof. Zaigham Abbas for a very elaborating presentation on the surveillance of HCC. He focused on tumor markers from the pathology perspective.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali, Consultant Interventional Radiologist, Department of Radiology, Ziauddin University presented on “Perspective of Interventional Radiologist in the Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma” he said, ‘assessment of patients based on modified RECIST criteria is helpful in the measurement of tumor response. He further elaborated different radiological interventions for HCC like partial hepatectomy, PEI, RFA, Microwave Ablation, TACE, TARE or SIRT, and CyberKnife Radiosurgery.

Dr. Khurram Baqai, Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology, Dr. Ziauddin Hospital discussed the “Role of Gastroenterologist in the Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma” he said etiological factors in Pakistan were hepatitis C and B viruses and rapidly increasing number of fatty liver diseases. He suggested to the physicians that if we could control the complications of HCV and NASH ultimately we would decrease the chance of HCC.

The last speaker of the seminar was Dr. Reena Kumari, Clinical Oncologist of Dr. Ziauddin Hospital. Her topic of the presentation was “Treatment Options for Advance HCC”. Barcelona-Clinic Liver Cancer Staging System (The BCLC system) stratifies HCC patients based on tumor size, extent, liver function, and performance status, Child class and also directs us for treatment strategy. For patients with progressive disease who are not eligible for loco-regional treatments, current FDA-approved first-line treatment options include tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) Sorafenib, or Lenvatinib. She mentioned the recently approved first-line therapy for advanced HCC which includes atezolizumab and bevacizumab. She projected results of the IAmBrave study

KAHOOT Quiz Competition arranged after the presentations. The participants of the seminar enthusiastically participated in the quiz and interacted with speakers during the Q & A session. In the end, shields were presented to the speakers.

14th ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF PSSLD 2020

“Quick Decisions in Hepatology” was the theme of this annual Conference, hosted by the PSSLD from 11th September to 13th September, 2020 in Karachi. During this conference, more than 2500 people participated in different sessions of this international Conference.

PSSLD CLUB CLINICAL VIGNETTES

This webinar was hosted by PSSLD on 21st November, 2020. Dr. Rajesh Bansari, a renowned gastroenterologist from Karachi, was the presenter at this Clinical Vignettes. In this webinar, Nearly 150 people took part in this valuable discussion. The host thanked the presenter and the participants for making this session informative and collaborative. The participants thanked the PSSLD for organizing such awareness sessions both for students, doctors and the masses as well.

PSSLD JOURNAL CLUB

On 24th October, 2020, this session was organized PSSLD. Dr. Mohsin Subhani who is a Hepatology PhD fellow at Queen’s Medical Center at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, presented on the topic of “Thromboelastography, Guided Blood Component Use in Patients with Chirrhosis with Nonvericeal Bleeding: A randomized Controlled Trial”. This valuable session was attended by a majority of 200 people.

PSSLD CLUB CLINICAL VIGNETTES

Dr. Hassan Liaquat Memon, Consultant and Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist at Dow University of Health Sciences in Karachi, was the speaker in this webinar, conduct by PSSLD on 17th October, 2020. He gave presentation on “Clinical Vignettes” and “Jaundice: A Variable Presentation”. Nearly One Hundred and Fifty people joined this session.

PSSLD JOURNAL CLUB

PSSLD organized another Journal Club Event on 10th October, 2020. Dr. Farhana Kayani wPSSLD organized another Journal Club Event on 10th October, 2020. Dr. Farhana Kayani was the presenter at this session. More than 200 participants joined this valuable session, making it more engaging and collaborative by their active participation. The topic of the presentation of Dr. Fahana Kayani was “Development of a Nomogram to Predict Output after Liver Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Child-Pugh B Cirrhosis”. as the presenter at this session with more than 200 participants.

PSSLD CLUB CLINICAL VIGNETTES

On September 19, 2020, PSSLD Club Clinical Vignettes Was organized, in which Dr. MuhammadAtif Majeed who is Assistant Professor at Dow University of Health Sciences in Karachi, presented his topic. The title of his presentation was “Cases with Deranged LFTs”. Dr. Muhammad Kamran, Assistant Professor at Gastroenterology Fazaia Ruth Pfau Medical College in Karachi, moderated the entire session and thanked the presenter and the participants for joining this session.

PSSLD JOURNAL CLUB

Dr. Prince Misri Khan from Chandka Medical College & Hospital SMBBMU in Larkana, presented on the “Physical Activity Compared to Adiposity and Risk of Liver Related Mortatlity: Results from Two Perspectives, Nationwide Cohorts”. This webinar was hosted by PSSLD on 12th September, 2020 and 200 people became part of this valuable session.

IGg4 Related Disease-The Elusive Autoimmune Disorder

On 5th September, 2020, PSSLD organized this event in order to discuss IGg4 related diseases by joining the specialists from all over the world. Dr. Katarzyna M Pawlak MD PhD, Dr. Nabeel Tehami, Dr. Tossapol Kerdsirichairat MD, Dr. Zaigham Abbas, Dr. Romy Chamoun, Dr. Muhammad K. Hassan, Dr. John Leeds and Dr. Dalbir Sandhu presented their presentations related to Igg4 Diseases. Almost 700 members from all over the world joined this session.

On August 22, 2020, PSSLD hosted Club Clinical Vignettes, in which Dr. Hafiz Abdul Basit who Senior Registrar at Fazaia Ruth Pfau Medical College in Karachi, presented his topic, entitled, “Unusual Causes of Paraparesis” and “A Case of Late Liver Allograft Dysfunction”. Dr. Muhammad Atif Majeed, Assistant Professor at Gastroenterology department of Dow University of Health Sciences in Karachi, moderated the entire session and thanked the presenter and the participants for joining this session.
